On June 14th 2007, The Bedford Stuyvesant
Restoration Corporation kicked off its 40th
anniversary celebration with a festive gala
and awards ceremony at the new Stage 6 at
Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Aptly themed "The Stage is Set," the event
celebrated Restoration's pioneering past- as
the nation's first community development
organization; hailed its present successes
empowering the community with a range of
proactive programs; and heralded its future,
on the road to extending its reach to global
communities.
Some 500 community, philanthropic,
corporate, and business leaders, including
two Restoration former presidents, Franklin
A. Thomas and Theodore Barnett, and
distinguished government and elected
officials attended the event which raised
more than $600,000. In a special appeal, the
event raised more than $57,000 in five
minutes cash awards and scholarships for
college bound students that have
participated in Restoration's youth
programs.
The event honorees included The Bank of
New York, with Presidents Gerald L. Hassell
accepting the Community Development Award;
Barron M. Tenny, Executive Vice President,
Secretary & General Counsel, Ford
Foundation, receiving the Jacob K. Javits
Achievement Award and Hon. Albert Vann,
Member, New York City Council, 36th
District, accepting the Robert F. Kennedy
Humanitarian Award.
In other moving tributes, Restoration
honored Keyspan Vice President, Albert C.
Wiltshire, the Corporation's immediate past
Chair, who received the Chairman's Tribute
for Sustaining Leadership Award, and the
late Thomas R. Jones, Justice of the New
York Supreme Court and Restoration's first
Chair, who received (posthumously) the
Visonary Leadership Award, with son David R.
Jones, President & CEO, Community Service
Society, accepting. CNBC Correspondent
Sharon Epperson served as the evening's
Mistress of Ceremonies. For more information
