Bed Stuy Gets Cool

Thursday, December 20, 2012
Next summer, Bed Stuy residents will notice a positive change in how their homes stay “cool.” In partnership with the Cool Roofs Initiative, RETROFIT Bed Stuy was able to offer local residents free materials. The result of this partnership will be a decrease in Bedford Stuyvesant’s carbon emissions by 12 tons! By painting their roofs with a highly reflective coating, homeowners are able to increase the comfort of their homes during warm-weather months, decrease their utility bills and eco- footprint. Most NYC roofs are painted dark, encouraging absorption of the sunlight and heat. This sea of dark roof s creates a heat island effect, increasing the temperature of the city by 7.2 degrees, in comparison to our rural counterparts. Interested in a cool roof, or additional opportunities to increase your home’s sustainability and decrease your utility bills?
