Eleven high schools from across Brooklyn gathered this week to compete in the 10th Congressional District High School Art Competition hosted by Rep. Edolphus Towns and the Brooklyn Arts Council. The exhibition, located at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, showcases the best work of the most talented young artists in the 10th District. The winner of the Competition will attend a June 24th ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception unveiling their artwork at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

"I am deeply honored to offer this opportunity for the young artists of the 10th Congressional District," said Rep. Towns. "The artwork in this gallery collectively represents the extraordinary talents of our young people as well as our communities' commitment to helping them develop creatively."

First place winner Vince Maximin is a 9th grade student from Brooklyn High School of the Arts in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn. The second and third place winners, receiving $50 and $25 gift certificates to the Pratt Art Store respectively, are Desiree Camacho from Brooklyn High School of the Arts and Tyler Perez from St. Joseph High School in Downtown Brooklyn.

Monday's event drew students, parents, teachers, principals, and community leaders from across the district to see the winner chosen and to celebrate art in Brooklyn.

"What an outstanding opportunity for our communities to recognize the importance of art education for our youth," said Ella Weiss, Director of the Brooklyn Arts Council. This Competition will serve as a yearly tribute to art awareness in our communities and as a catalyst for further artistic creativity for our youth."

The exhibition will be on display in the Main Lobby at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, 1368 Fulton Street (cor. New York Avenue) through May 11th. The winning artwork is heading to the Capitol to join winners from around the country.
