Adrienne Haskell, Guidance Counselor (2007)
"I minimized my life down to the barest of necessities to save significantly to purchase my own house. I placed myself on every mailing list, and enrolled in as many programs as I could. It took me six years. I needed a program that would work for me and my young son. I wanted to go through a lottery process because the housing stock would be affordable. There's only one way I could have gotten this property and this is through Restoration's program. This house is my retirement, payment for my son's college education, the car for this 18th birthday, a dream realized and more all rolled into one. Everyone should have this opportunity."

Housing

A healthy community includes a diverse range of housing options suited to the needs of local residents, whether seniors, growing families, or people with limited incomes.

Bedford Stuyvesant has what it takes – beautiful, historic brownstones, plenty of rental apartments, and housing set aside for seniors citizens.

Restoration's goal is to preserve and add to these assets and resources, ensuring their quality, affordability, and value, especially with regards to homeownership opportunities.

Since 1967, we developed more than 2000 units of housing for all segments of the community. Currently, we are in the process of arranging for the recapitalization of housing sites containing more than 600 units of  affordable apartments for low-income families and seniors. In addition, we are creating a pipeline that is likely to add more than 100 units of housing over the next three years. The new pipeline includes affordable homeownership and rental units.

Neighborhood Homes Program (NHP):

Restoration is a designated developer in the Neighborhood Homes Program (NHP), a funding partnership designed to promote homeownership and long-term residency in resurging communities like Bedford Stuyvesant.

Participating nonprofit housing developers are charged with rehabilitating one- to four-family properties owned by city and federal agencies. The City of New York and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development subsidize construction costs in order to maintain affordability to potential buyers.

NHP home prices and sales are targeted to households earning between 80% and 165% percent of area median income, or approximately $48,000 to $98,000.

To date, Restoration has completed four homes and is in the process of rehabilitating an additional seven properties. We are proud of our first families who successfully purchased homes through this program. To hear their stories, please click here (Housing Stories)

Weatherization Program

Restoration's Weatherization Program has an established reputation as the leading provider of energy conservation services to property owners in Central Brooklyn.

Supported by the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal, the goal of the program is to improve energy efficiency and help save money for homeowners and renters among the way.

Services include installation of new windows, upgrade of heating systems, and the provision of energy efficient appliances, such air conditioners and refrigerators. Restoration trains and employs area residents to make these weatherization improvements, providing real skill-building and educational opportunities in line with our workforce development strategies.
