NYC Food and Fitness Partnership
Restoration is working with the NYC Food and Fitness Partnership, a collaborative working to make active living and healthy eating the easy and affordable choice for residents of all ages and backgrounds. Central Brooklyn qualifies as a “food desert”, where lack of advocacy and access to healthy foods prevents residents from making healthy choices about the food they eat. With few full-service supermarkets, residents have limited access to nutritious foods and what is carried is often poor quality or more expensive. Not surprisingly, obesity and diabetes rates in food deserts are significantly higher than city and state averages. Similarly, inner city communities such as Central Brooklyn typically have less access to safe, open spaces that encourage physical activity, making exercise less convenient and sometimes more expensive since one has to travel or join a gym. Faced with this challenge, Restoration is leading efforts to increase access to affordable and nutritious foods in Central Brooklyn as well as to enhance the number of public spaces that are safe and conducive to exercise and physical activity. Our goal is to help make the healthy choice the easy and affordable choice for residents of our community.
