47% of Americans do not have access to $400 without borrowing or selling an asset

After decades of confronting systemic financial discrimination, Black and low-income individuals and families often find themselves without essential financial assets. As a result, they are not only unable to grow their wealth, but are unprepared for any kind of financial emergency. Emergency savings will be the life line for many, meaning the difference between going to jail or work, being evicted or having peace of mind.

In response to this issue, Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation teamed up with Borough President Eric Adams to launch #BrooklynSaves, a borough-wide initiative to empower and educate Brooklynites to plan their finances, grow their financial assets, and build long-term self-sustainability. The initiative aims to help 1,000 residents save a combined $40,000 in vital emergency funds.
