As part of the American Rescue Plan, the Biden administration announced an expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) in 2021.

Families can now receive up to $3,600 per child (as opposed to $2,000 per child previously). Starting in July, qualifying families will receive up to $1,800 in monthly checks until December, with the second half of their CTC claimed on one’s 2021 Tax Credit. Payments are fully refundable: you can benefit from the credit even if you don’t have earned income or don’t owe income taxes.

  • $3,600 per year for children 0-5 ($300 per month)
  • $3,000 per year for children 5-17 ($250 per month)

The new CTC has the potential to lift millions of children out of policy and is a milestone in US social policy. Studies estimate that the new tax credits could reduce child poverty rates by 45%, lifting up to 4 million children out of poverty. It is one of the most ambitious steps toward ending child poverty in America in decades, with the potential to transform and stabilize the lives of millions of families and children.
